As a black man who is working in the space of autonomous vehicles (one of the few I know), this article hit particularly home for me. I was pinged multiple times about it by my friends. The AV community – and those in artificial intelligence in general – needs to be concerned about this. The inability to detect people of color raises major safety and equity concerns. If AV manufacturers – and in general, those who work in artificial intelligence – do not take into account people of color, it will further erode any confidence in the wide-scale use of the technology. People of color should be part of the testing – and in leadership roles within these companies – to make designers aware of these issues before they become a problem.
